A Popular Community with Record Sales

The announcement to build Foxfire was made by U.S. Homes Development Corp. in March 1982. It was advertised as a "Planned Community with Country-Club Living" north of Davis Boulevard on 320 acres in an area formerly known as King’s Lake North. Arthur Hills was contracted to design the golf course with a Florida-shaped lake, which is his trademark. 

By August 1983, Foxfire was taking shape and the construction of the roadways, golf course and home sites was well underway. The first residence was sold in January 1984 and by June, sales had far exceeded projected goals. The golf course opened for play in January 1985. Foxfire was completed in 1987 with 925 units, about two years ahead of schedule, and set a record for selling homes faster than any other development in Florida.

Unique Concept Often Imitated, Never Equaled

Two factors contributed greatly to the tremendous popularity of our community. One was that an equity membership in the club was included in the price of each property. The second was that the golf course was built to high standards and was of premium quality. This concept has been copied many times since, but never equaled by any other country club in kind.

Since September 1987, Foxfire has been a self-governing association with an elected Board of Directors consisting of seven members.

In January 1995, Foxfire opened an additional nine holes of golf and now has a 27-hole golf course located on 385 acres. In 1996-97, six additional houses were built, bringing the total number of homes to 931. Foxfire became a gated community in 1999 when the County Commissioners unanimously approved the closing of Kings Way.

Planning and Renovations Keep Foxfire Competitve

In October 2013, Foxfire completed the implementation of a ten-year master plan to restore the golf courses, enhance their aesthetics and beauty, and improve the playing experience. The master plan was segregated into two phases. 

The first phase, implemented in 2003, included rebuilding all 27 greens to USGA specifications.  The success of this project was the impetus for replacing the Clubhouse with a new 20,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, which was completed in 2005. 

The second phase of the golf course master plan was completed in 2013. The highlights of this phase included re-grading all 27 greens, rebuilding all bunkers, refurbishing and adding tee boxes on all 27 holes, and major fairway renovations on 12 of the 27 holes.   

Looking forward, the Foxfire Strategic Committee completed a ten-year rolling plan (2014 through 2023) that was based on input from a survey distributed to all members. The major focus of this plan is on landscaping/hardscaping improvements to the golf course and common areas, construction of a maintenance building to house equipment, roadway and parking lot resurfacing, clubhouse and office furnishing/decorating, new irrigation, and replacement golf carts. The strategic plan will be reviewed and updated annually.
